Network settings

Recent models support WLAN and DHCP. Everything should work automatically. However, the older models require some knowledge about networking. The DM7020 should support DHCP but in my case it just does not work with various routers. The DM7000 has not implemented DHCP at all. So settings must be set manually. You can connect the DB with the router via an ordinary LAN patch cable (CAT5e, not cross). Choose IPs within the subnet range. It does not matter whether DHCP is on or not. It is recommended to avoid IPs within the DHCP range Router setting: 192.168.1.100
Router IP192.168.1.1
Subnet mask255.255.255.0 DHCP range
192.168.1.100
Router IP192.168.1.1
Subnet mask255.255.255.0 DHCP range
Any PC which is part of the network within the subnet can access the DB now. Check it by typing 192.168.1.99 into your browser. The WebIF should appear now. It does not make a difference whether the PC retrieves its IP automatically or uses a static subnet IP (like 192.168.3.2). Dreambox setting:
Dreambox IP192.168.1.99
Subnet mask255.255.255.0
Nameserver192.168.1.1 (router IP)*
Gateway192.168.1.1 (router IP)
* = most routers act like local nameservers. If not you have to look up a valid nameserver IP of your provider

connecting the Dreambox via another computer

For my living room DB I only need an internet connection occasionally for updates etc. For this purpose I connect it via a LAN cable my notebook. The notebook connects to the internet via WLAN.

DM7000 -> LAN cable (cross over patch) -> Notebook -> wireless WLAN -> router

In this case what you do is to set up a second subnet: Router setting: 192.168.1.100
Router IP192.168.1.1
Subnet mask255.255.255.0 DHCP range
Dreambox setting:
Dreambox IP192.168.2.2
Subnet mask255.255.255.0
Nameserver192.168.1.1 (router IP)*
Gateway192.168.2.1 (PC-LAN IP)
PC setting (network - LAN - TCP/IP - settings - "use the following IP")
IP192.168.2.1
Subnet mask255.255.255.0
Nameserver192.168.1.1 (router IP)*
Gateway192.168.1.1 (router IP)
